Hollywood grandee Meryl Streep was awarded a Golden Globe lats week for her portrayal of former UK prime minister Margaret Thatcher, in the film “The Iron Lady”. But far from Hollywood, in the former mining communities of England’s north-east, people have not been rolling out the red carpet. There feelings are still very raw towards Thatcher, who closed most of Britain’s mines and who many blame for ruining their way of life and the very future of their society. I went to the former mining town of Chesterfield to talk to some of those who lived through the Thatcher years, and recorded this report for World Link on Deutsche Welle Radio:
