American embassies are among the best-protected buildings in the world. But it was not always so. When the US embassy in Oslo, Norway, opened in 1959, it was a cultural hub with a library and regular concerts for the locals. Increased global tension and not least 9/11 put an end to all that. The embassy has sat empty since diplomats moved to new quarters in 2017 but has now thrown its doors open once more – with a collection of restaurants, bars, a music venue and even a gym. I went to find out more and made this report for Monocle on Saturday.
